Moving into a new rental home is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Use this comprehensive checklist to ensure a smooth move-in process and avoid any surprises.

Before Move-In Day

2–4 Weeks Before

  • Schedule utility transfers (electric, gas, water, internet, cable)

  • Update your address with:

  • USPS

  • Banks and credit cards

  • Employers and payroll

  • Insurance (health, auto, renters)

  • Subscriptions and online shopping accounts

  • Arrange moving truck or professional movers

  • Start packing non-essential items (out-of-season clothes, decor, books)

  • Purchase moving supplies (boxes, tape, bubble wrap, markers, labels)

  • Take measurements of rooms and doorways for large furniture

  • Confirm parking or elevator reservations (if applicable)

1 Week Before

  • Confirm move-in date and time with landlord or property manager

  • Review lease agreement one more time (rules, fees, notice periods)

  • Pack room by room and label all boxes clearly (room + contents)

  • Arrange for time off work on moving day

  • Clean out your current home (or schedule professional cleaners)

  • Use up perishable food and plan simple meals

  • Set aside important documents (ID, lease, receipts) in a safe folder

Day Before Move

  • Pack overnight bags with essentials:

  • Change of clothes

  • Toiletries and medications

  • Phone chargers and basic electronics

  • Basic snacks and water

  • Important documents

  • Defrost refrigerator and freezer if you’re moving them

  • Confirm moving truck or movers’ arrival time and details
